چکیده

We investigate the improvement in sensitivity to astrophysical point sources of energetic (∼ 1 GeV) neutrinos which can be achieved with angular and/or energy resolution of the neutrino-induced muon. As a specific example we consider WIMP annihilation in the Sun and in the Earth as a neutrino source. The sensitivity is improved by using the angular and energy distribution to reduce the atmospheric-neutrino background. Although the specific improvements depend on the backgrounds and assumed sources, the sensitivity to a WIMP signal may be improved, with equal exposure, by up to roughly a factor of two with good angular resolution, and by up to roughly a factor of three with good energy resolution. In case of a positive detection, energy resolution E-mail address: [email protected] E-mail address: [email protected] E-mail address: [email protected]

Neutrino properties from high energy astrophysical neutrinos

We make two basic assumptions which are reasonable. The first one is that distant neutrino sources (e.g. AGN’s and GRB’s) exist; and furthermore with detectable fluxes at high energies (upto and beyond PeV). The second one is that in the not too far future, very large volume, well instrumented detectors of sizes of order of KM3 and beyond will exist and be operating; and furthermore will have (...

Astrophysical Neutrino Event Rates and Sensitivity for Neutrino Telescopes

Spectacular processes in astrophysical sites produce high-energy cosmic rays which are further accelerated by Fermi-shocks into a power-law spectrum. These, in passing through radiation fields and matter, produce neutrinos. Neutrino telescopes are designed with large detection volumes to observe such astrophysical sources. A large volume is necessary because the fluxes and cross-sections are sm...

Multimessenger search for point sources: ultra-high energy cosmic rays and neutrinos

The origin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) and neutrinos is still a mystery. Hadronic acceleration theory suggests that they should originate in the same sources (astrophysical or cosmological), together with gammarays. While gamma-rays have been linked to astrophysical sources, no point source of UHECRs or neutrinos have been found so far. In this paper, the multimessenger combinatio...

Search for neutrino-induced cascades with 5 years of the AMANDA-II data

The Antarctic Muon And Neutrino Detector Array (AMANDA) is a Cherenkov detector deployed in the Antarctic ice cap at the South Pole. We present the analysis of the AMANDA data collected during 1001 effective days of the detector lifetime between the years 2000 and 2004. We focus our search on electromagnetic and hadronic cascades which are produced in charged-current interactions of high-energy...
